Acceledent Teeth Straightening Therapy

A quick guide to AcceleDent® for teeth straightening

Below is a quick overview of AcceleDent® therapy, which is used for teeth straightening. Review this information when looking into the different options.

How AcceleDent® works

AcceleDent® works through a handheld device that contains a mouthpiece and looks similar to a clear aligner. On the end of the mouthpiece is an activator, which exerts a force that encourages a shift in the teeth. Micropulses speed up the movement of the teeth, which helps to stimulate the shift. The additional orthodontic therapy is then also encouraged to continue stimulating the movement of the teeth.

AcceleDent® only has to be used for 20 minutes each day. Additionally, on average, orthodontists report that results are noticeable within five to seven months of starting the treatment process. Traditional orthodontic treatments are sped up with the use of AcceleDent®, which means quicker results in almost half the time.

What else to know

With AcceleDent®, wearers should try their best to keep the device in for at least 20 uninterrupted minutes each day. If the 20 minutes are interrupted, the orthodontist recommends restarting the device so that it can work its magic properly.

The device does require charging from time to time, which can be done by simply plugging it in. A small light will let the wearer know when it is time to charge the device.

As far as cleaning goes, the AcceleDent® device does have to be taken care of each day. The mouthpiece does come off, which allows for oral hygiene practices. Lukewarm water can be used to rinse it every day; however, a few times a week, a gentle brush should also be used to rid the surface of any bacteria. Orthodontists recommend using a small amount of toothpaste to help clean the surface.

During AcceleDent® treatment, it is also crucial to still maintain good oral hygiene of the actual teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing, when possible, are necessary to keep the teeth in good shape.

Lastly, while AcceleDent® is an appealing therapy, it is important to know that not everyone is a candidate. Not all teeth-straightening cases are the same, which means it is up to the orthodontist to determine what cases would benefit from AcceleDent®.

Find out more from an orthodontist

When considering AcceleDent® or any type of teeth straightening therapy, it is advised to undergo a consultation with an orthodontist. The orthodontist can evaluate the teeth, jaw, and oral cavity to determine what type of treatment route may be most suitable. From there, a timeline and plan will be put into place, which will kickstart the treatment process.
